OUR VISION

By 2050, 2.5 billion more people will be living in cities!
New construction methods must be developed for this urban growth:

-> fast

-> multi-storey

-> low-cost

Our solution is to build with grass – with giant bamboo.

The high-performance bamboo construction elements we have developed can become the engine of sustainable urban development for Smart Cities and at the same time contribute to climate protection.

THE PROBLEM
Cities built with wood are a strategy to create carbon sinks on a global scale. But global warming is crossing the growing popularity of wooden buildings: commercial forests have already been so badly damaged by drought, insects and fire that there will no longer be enough affordable timber available to implement this strategy.

TURBOO©
Our solution is to use giant bamboo, the fastest growing plant in the world, to produce TURBOO© and use it to produce high-performance bamboo construction elements (HBB). The goal of the CLB development company is the global introduction of HBB for building construction. With HBB, timber construction is finally coming out of its niche to replace climate-damaging solid construction. TURBOO© is beam-shaped glulam made from bamboo slats. TURBOO© is the basic element, which is joined together by gluing to form countless constructions, comparable to bricks/masonry. This results in high-performance components made of bamboo = HBB.

HIGH, STRONG AND FLEXIBLE

As a semi-finished product, TURBOO© can be flexibly processed into high-performance bamboo construction elements (HBB). As a product, TURBOO© can be used by carpenters for posts, beams, ceiling or wall elements. First tests show that TURBOO© beams surpass all strength values of wood. Steel-like properties of high-performance components made of TURBOO© enable slim, wide-spanning and multi-storey constructions. With these elements, our goal is to enable earthquake-proof construction and high-rise construction. Material combinations with components made of softwood (like spruce or pine) are sought.

INDUSTRY 4.0
With our prototypical production plant we create the basis for the industrial scaling of the production of TURBOO©/HBB. Only a production plant with Industry 4.0 process methods can achieve the economically required production speed and quality. Automation, digitalization, flexible and systemic planned production lines are the solutions to do this.

CLB DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
The CLB development company creates the conditions for the establishment of an industrialized production of high-performance components made of bamboo and combines politicians, industry and research.

THREE HEADS, ONE GOAL

The CLB development company was founded in 2021 by Harry Knoll and Thomas Merten. A little later, Stefan Feld joined the team. We are united by the idea of combining climate protection and building with bamboo as the building material of the future.

BUILDING WITH GRASS

Giant bamboo is the ideal raw material in times of climate crisis and scarcity of raw materials with amazing properties:

  • rapid growth
  • no replanting necessary
  • steel-like properties
  • stores twice as much CO2 as spruce
  • protection of primeval forests by recultivation of wasteland with bamboo
  • global spread
GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION

Giant bamboo, which is suitable for processing construction elements, has a global distribution.

Main growing areas:

  • China
  • Southeast Asia
  • South America
  • recently Europe (France, Northern Italy)
BAMBOO PLANTATIONS

Bamboo plantations should be set up near fast-growing cities.

  • new building material for construction industry
  • harvest already in 4+ years
  • annual harvest on 40+ years
  • short transport routes
  • recultivation of wasteland
  • irrigation with sewage water
ENGINEERING I

The CLB development company finances and builds a simple, prototypical production facility for TURBOO© beams in Austria and Brazil.

Our goals:

  • Building authority approval TURBOO© in Europe
  • Construction of demonstration buildings
  • 100% synergetic use of the raw material in Brazil
ENGINEERING II

Our goal is to initiate the development a new generation of production lines (industry 4.0) for TURBOO© and HBB. Bamboo is becoming a new market for state-of-the-art machine builders.

  • glulam presses
  • sorting machines
  • drying and steaming units
  • calibrating machines
  • grinders
  • CNC technology
  • adhesive technology
  • systemic plant construction
PRODUCT FLEXIBILITY

Multi-storey buildings, even skyscrapers can be built with bamboo! All formats known in structural timber construction can be produced with TURBOO© and HBB. Material combinations with spruce, pine and other types of wood even chipboards are also possible.

  • beams, posts, beams
  • CLB panels
  • box and rib elements
  • roof trusses
  • sandwich panels
  • facade elements, doors, windows
BUSINESS TO BUSINESS

We live at the beginning of a time of scarcity of raw materials. TURBOO© and HBB become the growth engine for the urgently needed climate-neutral industrialization of the construction industry.

  • machine builders
  • adhesive producers
  • glued timber manufacturers
  • wood merchants
  • assembly centers
  • carpenters and module builders
  • property developers
  • civil engineers/architects
RESEARCH

The CLB initiates, organizes and finances numerous research projects on the following topics:

  • physical building investigations with HBB
  • use of bio-based adhesives
  • bamboo cultivation/management of plantations
  • CO2 accounting with accredited institutes
INVEST

You are warmly welcome to promote our pioneering work! A lot of development work still has to be done before TURBOO© and HBB enter the global market. Our strategy to show the feasibility of our vision with prototypical production facilities and demonstration buildings is handcrafted and needs your support.
